New Fish Virus Will Cause Changes-VHS
37 degree surface water
5-7 ft visibility due to the wind
walleye spawn will be late this year.
- A fish virus called viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) is causing massive fish die offs in the eastern great lakes region and is moving into Lake Michigan and Superior. This virus has killed large amounts of every kind of game fish we have in Big Green. It can survive in water for more than a week with out a host. VHS is not a human health concern according to the Wisconsin DNR web site.
- New rules in effect April 4th due to VHS- You may no longer use bloaters or smelt on any inland water. Freezing does not kill VHS and the bloaters and smelt come from the great lakes. Lake Trout fishermen will be affected by this rule change because they generally use bloaters for trout fishing through the ice. Anyone using the great lakes must drain the live wells of their boats before leaving the landings or risk hefty fines and the welfare of our lake and other inland lakes.
- Visit the Wisconsin DNR Website for the full rule changes and expect more changes as this virus moves west.
- General inland fishing season opens the first Saturday of May. Lake Trout is open and you need a trout stamp. Panfish is open and fishermen are catching a few fish in the channels on the lake's backwaters. Catfish will start on the river and the inlet with the next warm up but remember you may only use cut bait or dead bait caught from the waters you are fishing.
