Heidel Bar Skims Over Today

  • The Large open tract of the Heidel Bar and east froze today making for some very dangerous ice conditions on the east end of Big Green. The open hole was straight off of Derrings' landing and directly in front of Carver's. This will not be safe to even walk on as it appeared wet today.
  • Fishermen caught some trout off Horner's directly to the east. Ice conditions vary from two inches to five inches. Don't travel WEST of Horner's at this time under any circumstances.
  • Some fishermen made it to White Bass territory off of Pilgrim Camp but reported little success and ice conditions were not safe.
  • The weekend temperatures look good for making ice on the east end. Don't take a chance and risk anyone's well being.

Portables Shacks On East and West End

  • Heidel Bar and east is still a large oval of open water. It encompasses at least 30 acres
  • 3-5 inches of ice on the east end where the old ice is. This is a dangerous situation with the open water.
  • West of Horner's Landing is open water.
  • Bluegills in the Bay and Mill pond but they are finicky and the best bite appears to be very early or late in the day.
  • Fishermen were off of Derring's and Pilgrim Camp today but were not out very far.

Main Lake Ice Is Unsafe

One snowmobile is in the lake
Heidel Bar is 30 acres of open water
Horner's across to Oakwood and west is open water
  • The ice that is on the main lake is still unsafe, 1 to 2 inches of ice on the east end with 5'' of insulating snow make for dangerous conditions. Lots of small open holes dot the east end and north shore.
  • Beyer's Cove was very slow today.
  • The Bay and Mill pond have fish but they are very finicky.
  • West end has some ice off county park, short of the drop off, but I would classify it as unsafe!

The Main Lake Is Opening Up

  • Everything west of Horner's landing is starting to break up today. The rest of the main lake has 5'' of snow on less than 1'' of ice. All main lake ice is unsafe, stay off!!
  • The bay, Beyer's Cove, and the Mill pond have 3-5 inches of ice with 5'' of snow on them.
  • A few small northern were caught in the bay today and some bluegills on the Mill Pond and Beyer's Cove.
  • Any wind will put a big hurt on the main lake ice.

Big Green Is Frozen Over

  • The lake froze over today in one very smooth sheet of ice. There is a little bit of open water from Wood's Bay (Sandstone) out to deep water that should freeze up tonight. We could be fishing by the end of the week. None of the new ice is safe!!!!

Lots of Eagles But Very Little Ice

36 degree surface water
12 Ft visibility
5'' of snow
  • The Bay, Beyer's Cove, and the Mill Pond are once again frozen over. 2-4 inches of ice cover these areas, so extreme caution must be used. If weather conditions hold we should have good ice on these areas by the weekend. I saw a fisherman with 19 nice gills from the Mill pond last night.
  • Horner's landing and Derring's were both open today. The inlet has some floating slush which makes landing a boat there difficult.
  • Boat fishermen had some luck last week trolling for Browns during the day and some nice Walleyes were being taken at night. Since the temperature drop, there has not been any boat traffic on the lake. If you go by boat, remember hypothermia kills, so be careful.
  • The Lake is full of Mergansers (fish ducks) and a lot of eagles. A large cottonwood tree on the inlet had 7 adult eagles and 2 juveniles in it Sunday.
