- We are seeing large schools of small fish which appear to be white bass. These fish are about 1'' long which would suggest these are a hatch from the lake spawning white bass. The last big hatch we had was in 93' and these fish were from silver creek and were already 3'' long by this time of year. The fish that spawn in silver creek would lay their eggs in late April or early May and the lake spawners were in the shallows this year around the second week of June. This would be the answer to the small size of the hatchlings. The DNR is trying to sample these fish this week to confirm that they are white bass. I will report any new information as we continue to monitor these fish over the deep water.
- Bluegills are abundant along the weed lines and aggressive biters on waxworms or small worms. The size seems to vary and you may have to catch a number of fish to take a meal but the future gill fishing on Big Green looks pretty impressive. You will need to fish these weed edges near the bottom for a couple more weeks until the gills start to come to the top.
- Crappies continue to add some fun to the panfish bag. Cast beetle spins or small minnows on the weed edges or over the top of the cribs. There are some really nice fish being caught doing this.
- Walleyes have been a little tougher bite right now although I know of 2 fish in the 30'' + range caught this week in deep water. These fish are 14 years old or older according to the spine samples provide by WFT for age data. Don't feed fish this old to children. Use crawlers or leeches along the weed lines to find 15-20 inch fish for your shore lunch.
- Northern Pike are still biting on big chubs but seem to be a little tougher to find. Most fishermen are working the weed edges out to 40 Ft of water.
- Lake Trout action should start to pick up again as we move toward September. It looks like the best depth to start would be 75 Ft of water and deeper. Use small spoons or medium shiners for action.
