Smallmouth Are Hot

35 Ft visibility
72.5 degree surface water
Most spawning is complete

  • Smallmouth have been fantastic on leeches and crawlers. Top water bite has been great when the wind isn't blowing. Be careful with your harvest because these fish are very vulnerable to over harvest at this time. In two weeks when you can't seem to find a 14''+ fish you will know exactly what happened to them.
  • Walleyes have slowed down, only to improve once the weeds are up and the visibility goes down in the next two weeks. Crawler and leech harnesses over the weeds will be productive.
  • Lake Trout have been fantastic the last two weeks. Troll or still fish the lakers in 70-110 Ft of water. Medium minnows or Sutton spoons have worked well in the last week.
  • Northern Pike are still in the weeds but should start to move deeper this week. The small pike will remain active in the weeds as long as the panfish are around.
  • The gills and crappies are starting to recover from the spawn and show up in the shoreline fishermen's basket. Fish any of the large weedbeds and expect a nice variety.

Clear Water And spooky Fish

15-20 Ft Visibility and increasing
68 degree surface water
Could be record visibility without any rain
  • Bluegills on the main lake are trying to spawn but are very spooky. This will change in the next week when they actually bed. Be good to the big spawners and don't over harvest. These fish will not be chunky due to their job of guarding the nest. Take a kid fishing and don't over harvest.
  • Crappies are starting to show up over the weeds and should start to be more aggressive in the next couple weeks. Small minnows or beetle spins are the best baits.
  • Smallmouth have been good to great but the clear water has made it a little more difficult. The top water action was awesome last night and should continue to be good with the clear water.
  • Walleyes will be a little easier to locate with the new weed growth. It appears to be a nice year class of 12-14 inch fish coming up so release these fish carefully.
  • Lake Trout action has picked up in the 60-90Ft range with sutton spoons and minnows. The fish have moved deeper earlier this year due to the early warm up.

Water Is Clearing Up And Action Is Getting Hot

69 degree surface water
7 Ft visibility and getting better
Leeches and crawlers are hot

  • Bluegills are just starting to come into the shallows of the main lake to spawn. Worms and waxworms have been the best bait to use under a small bobber. The inlet continues to produce nice fish east of the bridge.
  • White Bass have been spawning on the north shore of the lake this week. These fish are very nice size and are bunched up. Cast jigs and twister tails in the shallows from Derrings to Oakwood especially if the wind is blowing in.
  • Walleyes are showing up in the emerging weeds and numbers have been good. There is a lot of 13-15 inch fish showing up. Crawler harnesses and leeches have been the best choice of bait and 17 Ft of water and shallower the best depths.
  • Northern Pike have been very active on any minnow imitating bait. The fish haven't been running very large in size but are very aggressive.
  • Smallmouth are spawned out for the most part and very active in the shallow rocky areas. The next two weeks will be exactly what we wait all winter for so be ready. Small crankbaits and spinnerbaits will work well for artificial baits while leeches and crawlers are the top live bait choices. As the water clears up, top water action should be great.
  • Lake Trout action is picking up in 60-90 Ft of water. Sutton spoons and minnows have been working quite well.
