Mill Pond Gills Are Hot

42-44 degree surface water
5-7 Ft of visibility
Walleye spawn in full bloom

  • Walleyes for Tomorrow has over 3 million eggs in their hatchery and still looking for more. (They had a 40''+ pike in their nets today still full of eggs with estimates at between 16 and 20 pounds.) All recent year classes are showing up on the walleye spawning grounds. If we have a high water spring in the near future, Big Green's walleye fishing could return to the glory days. Walleyes for Tomorrow is maintaining year classes until mother nature can pull off a great hatch. The 93' year class was our last big natural hatch. These fish are 27-30 inches now.
  • Northern Pike are finishing up their lake spawning. The Silver Creek and Inlet spawn has been over for a couple weeks. The weed growth in the inlet has revitalized the northern pike population and should continue to carry us into the future as long as the carp barrier is maintained. A compromise with all parties involved is the only choice as this barrier is the best thing to happen to the Big Green Lake watershed in our lifetime.
  • Bluegills have been on a fantastic bite on the Mill Pond. Waxworms and small worms have been the top bait for the gill fishermen. Don't wait for this bite to end, fish them now.
  • Lake Trout have been very fussy. The Lakers will start to improve by the end of the month with the slight increase in water temperature. Fishermen have noticed the finicky bite in the last two weeks. The fish are tapping and letting go. Still fishing is the answer until water temperatures go up a degree or two.
  • IT IS PRETTY EXCITING TO SEE THE BIG LAKE IN SUCH GOOD SHAPE AGAIN-numerous small northerns, year classes of walleyes, bluegills everywhere, crappies , and a great trout fisheree. Stay involved and our kids will have years of fun! (remember to take only what you need-I heard of a horrendous fine for over bagging gills-$1460.00)

Bluegills Are Biting In The Shallows

40 degree surface water
Walleyes will start to spawn this week
Water visibility is less than 5 Ft
  • GENERAL FISHING SEASON OPENS SATURDAY MAY 6TH.
  • Bluegills have been biting on the Mill Pond and the back water areas of Sunnyside. Beyer's Cove and the channels are starting to produce fish also. I saw some fish in the bay by the park but most of them were small. The larger gills should show up this week. Use waxworms and black ants or ice jigs. Some fishermen are still using plastic.
  • Crappies are active in the channels and the inlet bridge. Small minnows are the best bait and late in the day and even into the night are the best time.
  • White Bass are schooled up in front of Pilgrim Camp and the Inlet Bridge in 30-50 Ft of water. These fish are a very tough bite right now. Some action should start on the bridge with jigs and twisters.
  • Lake Trout action should continue to produce fish. 30-80 Ft of water off the bars should provide action. I fished them Saturday with limited success in 60 Ft of water. They are biting very light on medium size minnows fished very slow. 20,000 Lake Trout fingerlings were planted last week with an average length of 7 inches. These numbers and size are impressive in comparison to other years. Brown Trout stocking will take place at the end of the month.
  • Walleyes for Tomorrow will be placing their nets in Woods Bay and Oakwood Point this week. They plan to incubate between 3 and 5 million eggs with the resulting fry being stocked in the backwaters of Sunnyside the first week of May.

All Landings Are Open

36 degree surface water
Your fishing License expired March 31st
Lake Trout action should be hot
  • Bluegills are in any of the shallow channels or back waters. Waxworms and black ants or ice jigs fished slowly should start to produce fish. The crappies are around also but prefer small minnows.
  • Lake Trout action has been very good for the few individuals that are fishing them. Minnows fished from 25'-80' of water are the best bait now.
  • General Inland fishing opens the first Saturday of May.
