Asian Beetles And Bluegills Meet Over the Weeds

73 degree surface water
15 Ft of visibility
39 Ft thermocline
  • Bluegills are still hanging tight to the cribs and the action on big gills has slowed. They are still there, but ''fishing'' is the answer as compared to ''catching'', as it was a few weeks ago. Some of the gills have moved to the weed edges already but nothing compared to when the lady bugs come to town. The soy beans will turn yellow soon and the Asian beetles(lady bugs) will hit the lake as the gills move shallow for a lot of fall fun. The Mill Pond has some fair sized bluegills in it already but a lot more small fish than eaters.
  • Crappies are hanging around the 14-18 Ft weeds and will bite on small minnows or little beetle spins. This is a fun bite and you can expect to have a cut off or two from the pike in the weeds.
  • Smallmouth action should start to really pick up with the water temperature drop. These fish will start to respond to minnows and any crayfish imitation as they start to beef up for fall. Spinner baits and top water will produce with the clear water we have now.
  • Lake Trout action has already started to pick up with reports from the pontoons boat guides as 'outstanding' on Monday. This bite should continue throughout September until the Lake Trout season closes on September 30th. Minnows and spoons behind dodgers trolled very slow continue to produce. As the cooler surface water pushes down, the white Bass and Browns will move deeper for the high water trollers. Look for these fish down 35-50 Ft over deep water.
  • Northern Pike action is fair but concentrated. The big fish are deep and on the feed bag when you find them. They are not as easy to come by but have added a lot of bulk when you find them in 30-45 Ft of water. Big chubs or suckers are still the best bait. For a change up in fishing try some of the cribs with big chubs on bobbers. Numerous fisherman have had the panfish taken right off their hooks by big pike or muskies.
  • Walleye action has been average with some nice fish taken this week in deep water. One local fisherman had a 29 inch 'eye' on a big chub fishing pike this week. Weed edges with crawlers or the hard to find leech is your best bet for action.

Weed Edges Hot Again With Cool Nights

74 degree surface water
10 Ft of visibility
Wild Celery growing, a sign of fall
  • Bluegills will start to move shallow with the water cooling down. There is a lot of activity in the Mill pond but most fish are small. The cribs are still producing nice fish and should be good for 2 more weeks. Waxworms and small worms are still the best bait.
  • Crappie action over the weeds is good but not as hot as it was last week. Troll or cast small minnows or jigs with twisters over the weed beds on the east or west end of the lake.
  • Perch have been caught in the weeds and there are rumors of some 8 inch fish with an occasional 9 inch fish. Small minnows or worms are the best bet for these little tasty treats but don't expect 10'' fish.
  • Walleyes are still on the outside edge of the weeds or the deep drop offs. Medium minnows or crawlers have produced some eater size walleyes this week.
  • Smallmouth action is going to pick up with the cooler temperatures and it is time to start casting minnow imitations for these hard fighters. Numerous fish are holding on the weed edges in 16-18 Ft of water and can be targeted with live bait or small crankbaits. There was a nice 'top water' bite this week.
  • Northern Pike fishing has been great for the last month and slowed for a few days this week. The fish have really beefed up and seem to handle the cooler water better for the catch and release fisherman. Large chubs and suckers will continue to produce fish but you must consider the weed edges with the cooler water temperatures coming.
  • Lake Trout action will start to pick up as we get closer to September. The August lull is just about over although some fisherman caught suspended lakers over deep water this week. White Bass action has been quiet and the Browns should start to move shallow very soon.

Panfish Action Stays Hot

78 degree surface water
10 Ft of visibility
60 degree water at 40 Ft
  • Bluegills remain on the cribs this week. Small worms and waxworms will catch these little fighters. The bigger gills are generally deeper in the water column and the smaller fish will be cruising the tops.
  • Crappies are still over the weeds in 8-14 Ft of water. Troll or cast little jigs with twister tails and don't be surprised when a smallie or walleye interrupt your crappie fishing.
  • Smallmouth can be found on the weed edges and any of the rocky shorelines. Hellgrammites and small leeches are good bets when available. Top water baits and plastics have produced some nice fish this week also.
  • Northern Pike action has been very good on large chubs in 28-40 Ft of water. The catfish will also pick up these chubs and give you a fight to remember.
  • Walleye action has been spotty at best and some fisherman are catching nice fish after dark on crawlers. The big fish have moved over the drop offs into 25-45 Ft of water.
  • Lake Trout trollers are working the suspended fish over 125 Ft of water about 80-90 Ft down. The still fisherman have reported catching fish in 60-90 Ft of water and some of the trout have corn in their stomachs although most fisherman will use minnows for bait.

Bluegills On The Cribs-Take A Kid With You

78-80 degree water
16-20 Ft visibility
35-37 Ft thermocline
  • Bluegills on the cribs and weed lines are the hottest ticket to fun right now. With the night time cool down coming, the gills will slowly move to the weeds for an awesome fall bite, something we haven't seen since the early 1990's. The crappies are still over the weed tops and can be a lot of fun using a jig and a white twister tail. You never know when a walleye or smallmouth will grab on for a battle to remember.
  • Smallmouth action has been good on the rocky shorelines and the weed lines. A young girl weighed a 4+ pound smallie at North Bay today. Leeches are small and hard to get but are still the bait of choice. As fall patterns start to set in we will see a minnow 'bite' return.
  • Northern Pike action has been very good to outstanding. Big chubs and suckers are the best option when pursuing the big boys. The limited Muskies in the lake are also willing to take these same baits but have a tendency to 'suspend' over the same drops the pike are cruising.
  • Lake Trout action has been tough because of the depth you have to fish to find active trout with the summer heat. 'Still fishing' has produced fish in the shallower water but trollers are fishing in 100-120 Ft of water. Brown Trout fishing is an up and coming fisheree that we will enjoy in the near future. These fish have the potential to reach 20#.

Bluegills And Northern Pike Action Hot

78-80 degree surface temperature
14-18 Ft visibility
35 Ft thermocline
  • Bluegill action on the cribs and weed edges is excellent. 7-8 inch gills are common and will bite on waxworms or small worms. Take a kid fishing on this fun and rewarding bite. Crappies can still be found in any of the large weed beds but appear to be slowing down.
  • Smallmouth action is still good along any of the rocky shorelines although large fish appear to be more elusive. Leeches, crawlers, and hellgrammites are good live bait options and any of the tube jigs or spinnerbaits work great for casting.
  • Walleye action has slowed during this early August hot spell. The fish have moved to the drop offs during the day. Lindy rig a crawler or small chub to pursue these deep water fish.
  • Northern Pike action has been good all week although reports of large pike have not been common. Big chubs or typical 'musky plastics' will take these fish in 28-40 Ft of water. A lot of small pike have moved deep over the last week. Release these so called ''hammer handles'' and ''picklers'' carefully because they are our fish for the next few years. A lot of these small fish are mature females which we will need to maintain our fun in the future.
  • Lake Trout action has been deep with anglers running 110-130 Ft of water while fishing suspended. The White Bass and Browns are 18-30 Ft down and will bite on small minnows or spinners.
